NEA Big Read Nature Walks - SAVE THE DATES

March 18

Location TBD

Please save the date for a series of outdoor nature walks presented by Mechanics’ Hall and Momentum Conservation. We will gather for conversation and gentle movement at various locations in the Greater Portland area, discussing themes from Daniel Mason’s novel, North Woods, centered on the way that people connect to their place.

  • Wednesday, March 18th – a morning walk
  • Saturday, April 18th – a family event with children’s story and activities
  • Monday, May 18th – an afternoon/early evening walk

These walks will be a series that can be attended as such or just join us for one of them! More details, including locations and conversation facilitators, to come!

About the Series

Mechanics’ Hall was selected to be part of the NEA Big Read. From October 2025 to June 2026. We will present a diverse range of public programs inspired by Daniel Mason’s North Woods.

Events will explore themes of nature, resilience, and human connection. These activities highlight how Maine’s history of conservation and public land stewardship shows how our physical environment can foster hope, courage, and a sense of belonging, encouraging meaningful dialogue about nature’s role in strengthening community bonds.
